Diversity & Inclusion provides support for the many student-led opportunities on campus. Students are instrumental in bridge-building in the Carolina community and their involvement often extends beyond their university experience.

Numerous offices and departments across campus sponsor diversity and inclusion-related programming. Fellowship opportunities are also offered from various departments. In addition, outside organizations offer numerous programming, internships and fellowships. Please check this page for updated announcements. 

University-based Student Opportunities

The NC COVID-19 Student Response Corps is a collaborative effort to match students with local governments and nonprofit organizations in need of additional capacity. Opportunities for high-impact work span across the state and may help communities and organizations respond to COVID-19.

There is now a publicly available list of unfilled opportunities, which updates automatically when opportunities are added/filled. Students should contact internship hosts directly to apply.

This effort has already placed approximately 90 interns in positions across the state, and many additional organizations have requested an intern. Some of the opportunities are paid and some are remote. You can read more about the initiative here.

The UNC Institute for the Environment has announced the new 21st Century Environmental Health Scholars program for UNC-CH and NCCU undergraduates. Participants will gain research skills by investigating topics like air quality, climate change, vaping and water pollution. They will join a cutting-edge research team at UNC, earn a stipend over spring, summer and fall 2021 and learn about graduate school opportunities. Deadline to apply: December 20Internships begin January 2021.

Project Uplift & Positions Available


Project Uplift is a world-class program that enables high-achieving rising high school seniors to experience college life on the Carolina campus. Students spend two days visiting classes, meeting with faculty and staff, interacting with Carolina students, and participating in cultural and social activities. During May and June, approximately 1,000 rising seniors to participate in this unique early recruitment program. Project Uplift is scheduled for May 21-23, May 28-May 30, June 4-6, and June 11-13. All positions require a four-week commitment.

Community Counselor (CC)

The Project Uplift Community Counselor is a vital member of the Project Uplift team who, under the supervision and direction of the Recruitment Programs Specialist, serves as a counselor and positive role model for Project Uplift Participants. Community Counselors will be responsible for facilitating wellness and student life sessions using techniques learned through training seminars. Community counselors must also facilitate successful transitions of students between sessions and monitor students during evening hours. Additionally, Community Counselors engage participants in meaningful discussions about college and encourage them to pursue post-secondary education.

Resident Counselor (RC) 

The Project Uplift Resident Counselor is a vital member of the Project Uplift team who, under the supervision and direction of the Recruitment Programs Specialist, serves as a counselor and positive role model for what it means to live and learn in a diverse college environment.  The Resident Counselor will be responsible for creating a positive, constructive living/learning environment as well as be responsible for monitoring students during evening hours. Additionally, Resident Counselors communicate information regarding the Project Uplift program, engage participants in meaningful discussions about college and assist participants in connecting with peers. Resident Counselors must assist participants with residence hall needs, interact with participants and help with transitions to and from sessions as well as provide overnight supervision.

Activity Counselor (AC) 

The Project Uplift Activity Counselor is a vital member of the Project Uplift team who, under the supervision and direction of the Recruitment Programs Specialist, serves as a resource, facilitator and positive role model for Project Uplift participants. Activity Counselors must monitor students during all academic and enrichment activities and lead class visits and information session.  Activity Counselors will be responsible for facilitating the overall experience of a small group of Project Uplift Participants by creating and implementing inclusive activities that enhance the academic experience and promote higher education. Activity Counselors will work to empower participants to engage in Project Uplift’s co-curricular experiences. Activity Counselors are the front-line staff members and must assist participants in learning more about UNC based on their knowledge of and involvement with the University while also creating an environment where students can live, learn and thrive.

Uplift PLUS


Uplift PLUS (UP) is a five-week program that takes place during Carolina’s Summer Session II. High-achieving Project Uplift participants are selected based on their outstanding Project Uplift applications. During the program, participants live on campus, attend SAT/ACT coaching sessions and take English 100 (3 credits). To further expand participants’ knowledge of different academic and career fields, Uplift PLUS students gain exposure to units across the campus community. Uplift PLUS will be held from June 21-July 24, 2020.

In addition to serving as daily program advisors, Uplift PLUS staff members serve as tutors and program facilitators.

Uplift PLUS Counselor 

The Uplift PLUS Counselor is a vital member of the Uplift PLUS team who, under the supervision and direction of the Recruitment Programs Specialist, serves as an academic tutor, resource, facilitator, and positive role model for participants. Counselors must monitor students during all academic and enrichment activities and lead class visits and information session. Counselors will be responsible for creating a positive, constructive living/learning environment and will be responsible for monitoring students during evening hours. Additionally, Counselors communicate information regarding the Uplift PLUS program, engage participants in meaningful discussions about college, and assist participants in connecting with peers. Counselors must assist the Uplift PLUS coordinator with planning and implementing weekly activities. Counselors must assist with transitions to and from sessions, classes, meals and recreation activities and must assist participants with residence hall needs. Counselors must serve as English tutors and provide support during study hall hours.

North Carolina Renaissance


The North Carolina Renaissance (NCR) program invites rising juniors from rural communities for an educational four-day enrichment program. The objective of the program is to inspire high-achieving scholars to pursue their educational aspirations while developing unique leadership skills. NCR will be held from July 18-11, 2020.

Student Ambassador 

The Student Ambassador position is a leadership position that will work with both Project Uplift and Uplift PLUS. The Student Ambassador will assist with the planning and implementation of Project Uplift and Uplift PLUS. This ambassador will have a leadership role and specific duties during Project Uplift and will serve as the Student lead for Uplift PLUS. This includes working with professional staff and graduate assistants for program coordination and counselor and participant management. This is one position that will work with both programs.

Summer Enrichment Programs Graduate Assistant

The Summer Enrichment Programs Graduate Assistant is an important member of the D&I team and is a major contributor to all events related to Student Access and Success. The Graduate Assistant will assist with the coordination and implementation of all D&I’s summer enrichment programs, specifically Project Uplift, North Carolina Renaissance (NCR) and Uplift PLUS, and will provide direct oversight for all para professional student staff and participants. Due to SAS’ dynamic and student-centric environment, the Graduate Assistant must be well-versed in basic student development theories and practices. The Graduate Assistant must perform in the areas of student development and programming support.

The Learning & Assessment Graduate Assistant is an important member of the D&I team and is a major contributor to all events related to Student Access and Success. The Learning & Assessment Graduate Assistant will be instrumental in updating a comprehensive assessment plan that will help to measure, support and improve SAS’ program goals. Additionally, the Learning & Assessment Graduate Assistant will assist in the development and facilitation of experiential learning and academic enrichment opportunities. This position will support a culture of continuous improvement by analyzing and evaluating all SAS summer enrichment programs in addition to assisting with the development and implementation of all of SAS’ recruitment programs and summer enrichment experiences.

The Student  Access and Success Committee (SASC) is accepting applications for the following positions:

Eligible applicants must be in good academic standing and currently enrolled as a sophomore at UNC-Chapel Hill. Selected candidates will serve in an elect capacity for the remainder of the 2019/2020 academic year and throughout the summer and will officially hold the position for the 2020/2021 academic year. These programs will provide participants with a glimpse into the college experience and the tools and information to apply to college. These programs will also demonstrate concern for the well-being of the whole student, affirm cultural identities and advance inclusive excellence. The Project Uplift component will require the ambassador to be on campus for a retreat on December 13th and 14th and from May 13–June 13.

The ambassador will advertise by crafting a weekly newsletter, designing flyers and social media posts and creating a communication plan.

The role of Student Ambassador for Communication and Public Relations also includes a summer component. The Student Ambassador for Communication and Public Relations will serve as the liaison for the Friday Night committee, as well as assist with the registration and social media for Diversity and Inclusion’s Project Uplift program. The Project Uplift component will require the ambassador to be on campus for a retreat on December 13 and 14 and from May 13–June 13.

Student Ambassador for Student Engagement and Logistics

The Student Ambassador for Student Engagement and Logistics assists with the management of the SASC premier volunteers and provides “day of” and logistical support for all SASC programming and events. The ambassador will assist with the selection, training and management of the SASC premier volunteers,  including but not limited to: assigning volunteers to give tours for families and small and large groups; assigning volunteers to sit on panels for events and hold volunteers accountable for meeting all requirements. The ambassador will also assist with recognizing the volunteers at the end of the academic year for their achievements. Logistical support includes reserving classrooms and breakout rooms and coordinating with vendors and event staff during SASC programming.

The role of Student Ambassador for Student Engagement and Logistics also includes a summer component. The Student Ambassador for Student Engagement and Logistics will serve as the liaison for the Souvenir committee, as well as assist with logistics for Diversity and Inclusion’s Project Uplift program. The Project Uplift component will require the ambassador to be on campus from May 13– June 13.

The Student Ambassador for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Education will assist with garnering student interest and support in these programs as well as selecting student recipients for scholarships.
